Lucky Tourists End Long Imprisonment; 10 Disappointed
Forty-two expectant motorists last night camped on the banks of the
river near the steamer dock and awaited the arrival of the Teal,
knowing that the vessel could only carry about 30 of the cars on its
return trip to Portland.
Among the crowd were persons who have been held up for more than two
weeks in their efforts to reach Portland, some at Arlington and others
in The Dalles.
Each motorist had been given a number priority to determine which cars
would be taken by the steamer on its return trip to Portland. Hoping
against hope, all awaited the arrival of the boat, however, building
big fires on the beach with which to keep warm.
Awaiting Next Trip
After loading the vessel to capacity, only 32 of the automobiles could
be packed in, with the result that 10 despondent drivers returned to
the city, to await the next trip of the vessel, which will be Thursday
morning. The Teal, according to the present plan, will reach The Dalles
again Wednesday night.
Although only 10 cars were left after the boat had been loaded last
night, the number to be shipped was swelled to 29 today by the arrival
of additional automobiles from Pendleton and way points, according to
H.R. Fancher, manager of The Dalles garage.
Tired of waiting, a number joined together today and shipped their cars
by rail, chartering an automobile freight car for that purpose.
