[Last Week]    The Beach family, Charles, Doretta, Lela and Claude, set out from Cornwall, Ontario on October 18, 1921. This is Doretta's diary.

Hotel Turpin, San Francisco. Dec. 20th. Just got here to San Francisco about half past four, leaving Stockton at eleven A.M. Had a nice trip of about seventy-five miles stopping at Oakland, Calif., for lunch and had to cross on the ferry. That takes twenty minutes and it rained a little on our way over, and when we got to Oakland, it rained real hard and all the time we were in at lunch. We do not like this hotel and if we do not get an apartment will likely change hotels. Claude has gone out to look up Easton and located them, and Easton came back to hotel with him at half past eleven P.M., and stayed until two A.M.
Dec. 21st. We slept late, had breakfast. Claude got car and we went out looking for an apartment. After going to Post Office for mail and got one on Shuter St., very central. Then went and had lunch and just got back to hotel and met Easton, so he went with us around several places, and then we took him home and went in to see Flora and the children. Stayed until about five o'clock, came back to apartment and got partly unpacked then went out for supper and it is raining hard. Claude has gone out to take in the sights.
Dec. 22. Weather bright, slept late, got things in shape, had our first meal breakfast in apartment. In the afternoon went out to look up Lela's friend and found the place but she was out, so came back, looked around a little and went and had supper. Came home and there was a phone call for Lela from Ada and they arranged a programme. Then in evening Easton phoned they would be over and did not come until nine o'clock and stayed until one A.M. After they went away Claude, Lela and father cooked oysters and had them before going to bed. Did not have enough to cook when our company was here. Sometimes the sun shines and some times it is raining.
Dec. 23rd. Weather changeable. In the afternoon Claude took Lela out to Ada's. Came back and got us and we drove down through Chinatown. Went out for tea.
Dec. 24th. Raining. Lela and her father went down town and got a chicken and other eats and we had our Christmas dinner about four o'clock, and as it rained all day did not go out.
Dec. 25th. Sun shining had breakfast and went to the First Congregational Church. Enjoyed the Service. About two o'clock all drove out to Eastons and they were not at home so went out and took Ada and her husband and friend, and went out through the Golden Gate Park to the ocean. As there had been a bad storm in the early morning, trees blown down and telephone wires and poles upset, we went out to see the ocean. It looked very rough. Then came back and called to see Neil Henderson and he was not at home. Came on and left Lela at Ada's, where she was invited for dinner and we came on down and went out for ours. Then came home until church time and went to the Meth. and heard a wonderful sermon.
Dec. 26th. Raining this forenoon, had late breakfast and Chas. and Claude went down town and Mr. and Mrs. Neil Henderson called and was ready to leave when Chas. came, so stayed a while longer. Raining again this evening. Chas. and Lela went out for a walk.
