The Beach family, Charles, Doretta, Lela and Claude, set out from Cornwall,
Ontario on October 18, 1921. This is
Doretta's diary.

Tues. Jan. 3rd. Weather fine, in afternoon went down to Chinatown, came home,
had dinner and went out. Lela called to see Ada and then we all
went over to Neil Henderson's for the evening.
Jan. 4th.
Weather
fine and we went shopping. Chas. and Claude took
Lela's watch to get fixed and get the car washed. Then all came back,
had dinner. Chas. went to a
lecture,
Claude went down town and Lela and
I to the Congregational Church to hear
Dr. Gordon.
Lake Merritt, Oakland, Calif.
Jan. 5th.
Left home
about ten o'clock and crossed the San Francisco Bay on
Ferry to Oakland
and spent the day. Went over to Berkeley to see the
University the largest in the U. S., and went through their Oakland
Auditorium, which is lovely and drove around the lake. Had a real
pleasant day, then went to
Loew's Theatre
to see
The Speed Girl
and after to Archie Currie's to spend the evening and had a nice time and
got home at one o'clock A.M.
Friday Jan. 6th. Weather fine in A.M., and afternoon rainy. Mr. Best
called to see us on his way home to Spokane. Then we all went down town
to get some eats and Lela and I went to some of the stores, got home,
had dinner and then all evening wrote letters.
Sat. Jan. 7th. Morning fine. In afternoon rained a while. We went out
on Calif. St., to hunt up a woman Emma has asked us to see, but did not
find her and went out to
Cliff House
and went down and watched the
seals playing around a while, then went home had dinner and worked at
our fancy work.
Sunday Jan. 8th.
Morning beautiful. Went to the Congregational Church.
Came home had lunch and went out and took Ada and her husband for an
hours ride. Then went over and got Neil and Mrs. Henderson and went
over to Presidio, where there was an
aeroplane circus.
Two of them let
down a man in a
parachute.
Came home, had dinner and Lela and I went to
the Methodist Church and heard a great sermon.
Monday Jan. 9th. Bright and warm not much excitement. Lela, Father and
I went out to Neil Henderson's for the evening.
