The dry dock in the old canal basin furnishes a place for
the repair and rebuilding of many vessels, and during the winter and spring a large number of
men are employed there.
The population of Cornwall proper by the census of 1901
was 6704, but the suburbs of Lorneville, Gladstone, Beaconsfield and Smithville account for
fully 3000 more. These figures are now considerably below the mark, as the establishment of
new factories in the past three or four years has added largely to the number.
For the information in the foregoing pages, we are indebted
to a considerable extent to "Lunenburg," by the late Judge Pringle of Cornwall, and to
"The Story of Dundas" by J. Smyth Carter of Rowena.
A large number of the illustrations are from photographs
specially taken for the booklet by Marsden Kemp, Kingston; F. Bisset, Cornwall; J. McL.
Sutherland, Lancaster, and the local photographers. We are also under obligations to
W. Macpherson, Williamstown; Miss A. Cresswell, Martintown; J. A. McMillan, Avonmore;
D. MacMillan, Maxville; D. Donovan, Alexandria; D. McClew of the Glengarrian ; Mr. Carter
of Rowena, and the Canadian Magazine, Toronto, for courtesies.
